Fire Dynamics
Analysis of ignition, development and fire propagation within the StudioFSE® framework.
Fire Dynamics is the foundational disciplinary domain for analyzing thermal phenomenology of fire. It addresses ignition mechanisms, fire growth, flame propagation, and energy release characterization through quantitative methods aligned with international Fire Safety Engineering standards.
Theoretical Foundation
Fire behavior is governed by conservation equations (mass, momentum, energy) applied to reactive flows. The StudioFSE® framework employs established correlations and computational methods to characterize:
Ignition sources and ignition sequence
Heat Release Rate (HRR) as primary design variable
Flame height, plume dynamics and ceiling jet
Thermal radiation and convective heat transfer
Fire growth curves (t-squared, design fires)
Methodology
Fire Dynamics analysis within StudioFSE® follows a structured approach:
Fuel load characterization – Identification of combustible materials, calorific values, and spatial distribution
Scenario definition – Selection of representative and conservative design fire scenarios
HRR curve construction – Application of t-squared models, tabulated data, or experimental correlations
Thermal field prediction – Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) or zone modeling for temperature and heat flux
Verification against acceptance criteria – Comparison with tenability thresholds, structural limits, and safety objectives
Applications
Fire Dynamics analysis is applied across all project typologies:
Definition of design fire scenarios for performance-based verification
Input for CFD simulations (proFDS module)
Basis for evacuation time analysis (ASET calculation)
Thermal loading for structural fire engineering assessments
Smoke production and toxicity estimates for tenability analysis
